The town of Uherský Brod lies at the foothills of the White Carpathians at the Olšava and Korečnice rivers confluence near the Czecho-Slovakian border. The first record about a settlement at the ford across the Olšava dates back to 1131. In 1267, the place was promoted to royal city and given numerous privileges by Přemysl Otakar II, obviously thanks to the strategic and commercial importance. In 1592, the renowned philosopher, philologist, tutor and social reformer Jan Amos Komenský, or Comenius, was born in the region. The town's remarkabilities are the spires of churches and the town hall, visible long before you have entered the town from whichever side you approach. All other's senior is the spire of the Master John Hus Czechoslovak Church Cathedral, one of the oldest churches in the region. The Masaryk Square boasts of other two spiřed monuments: the Virgin Mary Immaculate Conception Church built by the l8th century Italian architect Domenico Martinelli's design and the ancient town hall. Also adorning the square, are the baroque fountain with St Florian's Statue by J. A. Winterhalter. The last two spires belong to the monasterial Virgin Mary Assumpted Church. The Comenius Museum is found in the town's north and concentrates the studies of the famous native's life and work. The Museum's singularity is the baroque Column Hall, the scene of conce_rts of serious music. The museum organizes exhibitions of local and Czech artists. Uherský Brod's synonyms for industry are the Slovácké Strojírny machinery works and the Česká Zbrojovka, manufacturer of valued pistols and hunting weapons. 1994 was the 100th anniversary of local beer production. The town's political importance increased following the disintegration of Czechoslovakia and population reached 18,000. Not far away, the famous spa of Luhačovice offer the healing mineralized water and another little town, Bojkovice by name, lies further to the East, at the foot of the elevated château of Nový Světlov, providing fine and sought for accommodation. |
