The district centre of Louny, a town of 20,000, lies on the banks of the Ohře river. It is surrounded by picturesque hills of the Bohemian Central Highlands. Founded by Přemysl Otakar II in the middle of the l3th century in place of the old merchant's settlement, it became a pillar of the Hussite movement later. In spite of many fires in the past, the historical core shows many fine sights. The most valued monument is the l6th century St Nicolaus Cathedral built by Benedikt Ried, a recognized gem of late Gothic. The circumference of the old town is partly made by fragments of the l3th century fortifications. Also, numerous well preserved citizen's houses can be seen, mostly in late Gothic or Renaissance. Louny's strong points are accommodation and sports facili ties. The nearby Raná hill is a famous hang-gliding centre. The large park along the river is a place for frequent selling exhibitions. |
