The slogan is an expression of constant dynamic change. It speaks out the development the town is undergoing now , and its vitality. The second, hidden sense is the relationship of Litvínov to sports. Lying at the feet of the Ore Mountains' southern hillsides, Litvínov is home of 30,000 people. It is one of the Most District's centres of trade, industry, sports, culture and social life. Litvínov was founded some time back in the l3th century (Lutwynivilla, Lu2winov), the 1352 Registrum Decimerum, papal tax book says. In 1715 Litvínov was granted the freedoms of a city by Emperor Charles VI and the first weaving manufactory was commenced. Testifying to this, the western side of Litvínov's square shows an obelisk erected in memory of the manufactory's centennial existence. Built by Jan Baptista Mathey in 1694, the Archangel Michael's Church is the oldest architectural sight in town. Several baroque sculptures are scattered in Voigt's Park adjacent to the church's hind tract. Some of these are said to have originated in Matthias Brown's workshop. Built before 1727, the Wallenstein château is Litvínov's second oldest architectonic gem. Rebuilt by architect F. M. Kaňka to assumc its present shape in 1732, the mansion now harbours an exhibition of local history. Art-Nouveau is the style of a couple of redeveloped houses in the Tržní and Smetanova Streets. Modern age added a unique work of purpose-conscious urbanism to Litvínov's face: the Koldum, built by V. Linhart's design in 1948- 58, which has been added to the Central Register of Monuments of Culture. Litvínov has joined in the huge in dustrial development of the NorthBohemian Region. Leading position in local economy belongs to Chemopetrol a.s., a large producer of oil products. Industrial giants have promoted development of trade and infrastructure, like Litvínov's Business Centre. It is run by a Czech-Flemish company whose prime objective is to support small and medium-size businesses. Founded by the town of Litvínov and GOM-West Vlaanderen in 1995, the centre helps beginners to start their own businesses. It helps reduce starting costs by sharing, by management assistance and by providing rooms at acceptable prices. The high concentration of industry produced a strong class of technically educated population. The town is promoting education by running or supporting many schools and educational institutions: the private Sports School, a basic school with extended language courses, the Basic School of Arts which runs the locally famous children's bi.g band. Carrier of the secondary education is the very successful T. G. M. Grammar School, as measured by the success rate of its graduates. The most special thing about education in Litvínov is Schola Humanitas, Czechia's one and only school that provides comprehensive environmental education. Social life and culture belong to Litvínov's centres like Citadela, with big halls, moving-picture theatres, a library of books and video-tapes, etc. Citadela organises cultural events and regular theatre performances and concerts. The new puppet theatre called "Quite A Big Theatre" opened in late 1996. Several youth clubs operate in the town, like Extreme BPM or the Pionýr Club. Some social events involve the whole town, like the May Day Wallenstein Festival or the Ore Mountains Christmas that offer cultural and sports programs during the pre-Christmas time. Apropos the sports. Litvínov stands for successful ice-hockey. Wide public can enjoy an indoor swimming-pool, summer and winter stadiums, a sports hall, tennis courts, two outdoor swimming- pools at Koldům and Hamr, a gymnastics centre, fitness centres, etc. Litvínov's citizens simply love sports. The close Ore Mountains present good opportunities for summer and winter trips, biking tours and downhill sküng, especially at Klíny and Český Jiřetín. Litvínov is where active people feel at home, people who love life the way it is. Why not come and see the town and the country around. Though unattractive at the first glance, it hides a lot to see and admire. |
