Bílina-a millennial town in the heart of the České středohoří (the Central Bohemian Highlands) which spreads along the banks of a river that carries the same name. The Province of Bílina was first defined in writing in 993. At that time, the fortified settlement became seat of the Knight's castellans, local administrators. In 1263, Bílina was first referred to as town. Having had many owners, it was not until the Lobkowicz era (1502) that the town acquired its unique colour. They promoted balneal therapies and started to export the now well-known mineral water "Bílinská kyselka". The first thing that will arrest everybody's attention on arrival is the rocky Bořeň hill (539m) shaped like a lion preparing to jump. Finer and certainly more modest, the baroque Lobkowicz château is another local dominant erected back in 1908 -1911. The Gothic and Renaissance St Peter and Paul's Church at the château's feet gives the square a historic touch. Bílina has some 16,500 inhabitants who cultivate rich cultural life. Many visitors like to see the beautiful spa area Kyselka. |
