Gate to the Bohemian Forest (Brána Šumavy) is the nickname Sušice is carrying throughout the centuries. Coming from central Bohemia down to the Bohemian Forest, there is no way of avoiding this "gate". The mighty Svatobor Hill silhouette with a lookout tower on top is signalling well ahead that you are coming to Sušice, giving you the first taste of the blue contours of the Bohemian Forest's mountains and plains. Sušice's finest decoration is the incredibly clear Otava river that flows from Luh, the forest-clad park, to hurry towards the romantic ruin of the Rábí Castle. The hill called Stráž (the Guard) shows a unique manmade contour of the Guardian Angels' pilgrimage church. The view of the town is worth the climb. Historical sights cannot be missed in the square: the town hall, Muzeum Šumavy (Museum of the Bohemian Forest), the former pharmacy with beautiful grafitti-decorated gable and the Fialka hotel. Sušice used to be a renowned summer holiday place between the wars. Today, it is a town of manifold experience. |
