The wide valley of the Střela river, some 25 km off Pilsen on the road to Most is where the town of baroque sights dipped in the green is situated. The town is centred around the former Cistercian Monastery and some other historical buildings. Founded by Knight Vladislav II back in 1114, the present convent buildings were erected in 1711-1740 by architect Santini's design. Parts of the monastery are the recently restored chapels of St Bernard and St Benedict, the prelate's house, and the early-Gothic "Royal Chapel" with a spire and clock, the courtyards and the former St Wenceslas' Church, later rebuilt to the family vault of one time Austrian Chancellor Metternich. The urban unit is rounded off by the Virgin Mary Assumption Church which boasts of beautiful carved interiors and paintings created by outstanding artists. The tourist centre of Plasy is seated in the arms of forests and green, with high-quality fresh water in the fountain of Prelátky and clean water in the Střela river in which the trout lives. Plasy is a regional centre of education. Beside kindergartens and basic schools, Plasy has a grammar school and one other high school. The town has been a cultural centre, too. It is worth visiting even though many architectural sights are still waiting to be restored.
