Seated at the borderline between Bohemia and Moravia at an altitude of 354 m, Moravská Třebová (population 12,000) was founded by Boroš of Rýzmburk as one of the colonist's settlements with the so typical regular plan in the middle of the l3th century. Down to 1945, Moravská Třebová had belonged to the German-speaking island called Hřebečsko (Schönhengstgau) where textile industry had been the engine of economy. Many buildings and pieces of art are reminiscent of the economic bloom and advanced culture at the times of the Lords of Boskovice and of Ladislav Velen of Žerotín (1486-1622.) Moravská Třebová was then nicknamed "Moravian Athens" for its tradition of humanistic education. Top place on the list of material witnesses of those times belongs to the château portal of 1492, one of the oldest architectural sights of the Renaissance north of the Alps. The château is going through gradual restoration and is reclaiming the reputation of cultural and social centre (museum exhibitions of Renaissance and humanism, permanent exhibition of the National Gallery of Prague, concerts and other events.) Many remarkable late-Gothic and Renaissance houses have been revived in the centre and returned to their original purpose of shops and offices. Special attention is deserved by the Renaissance Town Hall. More valuable artifacts of the Renaissance are found on the nearby hill of Křížový Vrch, especially the collection of tombstones. Some rare pieces of art date back to the baroque era when outstanding artists like J. T. Supper, J. Pacák and others lived in Moravská Třebová. Historical centre and the Křížový Vrch were registered as items of National Heritage. Beside the documents of local history, the Town Museum also cherishes an unexpected collection of overseas art. To breathe life in the many historic monuments, festivals of culture are staged at various places of Moravská Třebová: the annual Slovak Culture Festival in April; the Witchcraft and Fun Château Festival each August; the theatre festival named "Štronzo" in November; graphic and plastic art exhibitions throughout the year. Moravská Třebová also offers fine countryside around with many opportunities to go in for sports, presenting itself as an ideal destination for lovers of history, art, nature, travel, and sports. |
