The township of Kynšperk, since 1950 called Letohrad, was born in the l4th century. The baroque castle was evolving from the Renaissance fortress of 1554 until 1680 when Ignác Dětřich Vitonovský completed its final, present form. The baroque St Wenceslas's Church in the square is about of the same age. The John of Pomuk's Chapel atop the Kopeček Hill was completed under Jan Václav Breda in 1734. Kynšperk enjoyed some legal attributes of a city at that time, like the magistrate, right of torture, musical right. Annual and weekly fairs that have been held by the city till date, now continue as the popular Kopeček Carnival each May. An interesting piece of the modern industrial history is the safety match tradition of the previous century. The castle's pride is the vast land scape park founded by Earl Marcolini of Fereta in 1820-1830 where numerous exotic flowers and trees have been planted. Letohrad has become the stage of a regional event of culture: the International Festival of Music in which young soloists and ensembles from many countries take part each year since 1990. Letohrad's attractions include the location at the foot of the Orlické Hory mountains and a rich selection of cultural sights-a combination many domestic and foreign visitors find worth seeing.
