The town of Lázně Bohdaneč is situated in the lowlands along the Elbe at a crossing of the Pardubice-Chlumec nad Cidlinou and Hradec KrálovéKutná Hora highways, some 8 km north-east of Pardubice. As a crossing of merchant paths the place was mentioned as early as in 1264. Development came into the unimportant, placid, agricultural place in the late l5th and the early lóth centuries with the contemporary owner Vilém of Perntejn's idea to set up a vast pond system of over 300 lakes around Bohdaneč. The water came in via an artificial channel from the Elbe. Built in 1498-1514, the Opatovický Channel is now a fully operational technical monument. The pisciculture is carrying on in the town. The 160-hectare water surface of the Bohdanečský and Matka ponds is a nesting locality for rare water bird species and a National Reserve. Founded by Bohdaneč's native Jan Veselý in 1897, the mud baths helped cultivate the town up to its recreational character. Favourable climate conditions and beautiful nature around make their contributions, too. Ponds, meadows and forests invite to relaxing strolls and walks. Local building monuments are the historical Town Hall and the parochial Church of the Holy Mary Magdalene in the square. The Renaissance Town Hall has been serving its purpose since 1530. Attentive visitors will notice the somewhat queer chimney perched on the baroque church spire. Many buildings in the town were designed by the architect Josef Gočár who spent his young years in Bohdaneč-here are some of them: the therapeutic pavilion, the guest-house in the square, the water tower reservoir and the military barracks. Bohdaneč's visitors like to spend tranquil hours walking in the beautiful resort park or visiting the local cemetery with belfry and the St George's Chapel. |
