Třinec is an important industrial and social centre. First testified to in the l5th century, it saw its most important historic moment in 1839, the year when the ironworks of Třinecké Železárny were founded. In 1931, Třinec was finally acknowledged as town, certainly thanks to the Bohumín-Košice railway and the international highway. The influx of visitors sped up the opening of the border crossing to Poland at Horní Lištná. In terms of culture, the town offers a museum, a small gallery, cinema and community house. The sports area includes a winter sports hall, a stadium with athletic track, an indoor swimming-pool and sauna, an outdoor swimming-pool, a minigolf course, tennis courts, another sports hall and a bicross track. The vast park in the forest is a favourite place for ramblers and joggers. The countryside around is amiably picturesque with many peaks of the Silesian Beskids (Slezské Beskydy) at hand Javorový, Ostrý, Čantorie, etc. A cableway brings you up to the Javorový all year round. A mountain cottage on the top is part of the holiday base which includes sküng terrain, ski lifts and pistes for slalom and downhill ridcs, and mountain walls for paragliding stunts. Picturesque and deep valleys near the town attract mountain bikers and hikers in winter and all brands of skiers in winter. Nýdek has a ski jump. The nearby village of Guty cherishes the tiny wooden Body of Christ's Church built in 1563. Another 1579 late-Gothic church is found in Nýdek. |
