The city district Ostrava-Petřkovice is an integral left-bank part of the city of Ostrava. The district has been a synonym for mining from the old history on to the recent past. Presiding over the confluence of the Oder and the Ostravice, the historic Landek Hill, now part of the national heritage, is a place where supposed primeval man left traces some 23,000 years ago and where coal was used for purposeful burning for the first time on this planet. The locality is a candidate of UNESCO's World Heritage Fund. The Venus of Petřkovice (or, Venus of Landek) was found here. Here is where Ostrava's Museum of Mining was established, showing the mining history down to our times and all what goes with it. The city district of Petřkovice is now living a period of development, being increasingly looked upon as a trip destination by the locals and by people from a wide area around.
