Hradec nad Moravicí is a picuresque township with a population of 5,000 some 8 km away from the district city of Opava, not far from the border crossing to Poland at Sudice. The situation at the feet of the Lower Ash Moutains (Nízký Jeseník), in a hilly countryside at altitudes of 300-500 m that is covered with deciduous and coniferous forests makes fine, attractive sceneries. There are arhaeological finds that have proved old settlements dating back to 4500-2500 B. C. E. Hradec a city by receiving freedoms from Viktorin, the Knight of Opava in 1481. Hradec's dominant is'the large château that emerged from the old castle once inhabited by the Premyslides, the Luxemburgs, the Poděbrads, the Jagellons and the Hapsburgs, that was later converted into an Empire château of the Lichnovskýs. In the middle of the l9th century the château received a neo-Gothic extension called the Red Château. There are rich collections of art and a gallery inside. Hradec had the privilege to see L. v. Beethoven, F. Liszt, Paganini, Mánes and others work or at least making a visit here. With 130 hectares in area, the château park is Moravia's second largest. Hradec is keen of culture actions, like Opening the Spring, the Hradec Wakes, the young musician competition called Beethoven's Hradec, etc. Local architetonic treasures also include the l6th-century Peter's and Paul's Church with the stations of the cross called the Silesian Calvary. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and hotels in the town. As far as accommodation is concerned one can choose from the four hotels, a guest-house, the Sport Hostel, a campground and the Good Cheer Area at Zimrovice. The best hotel in town is Belária, including indoor swimming-pool and a fitness centre. Hradec's specialty is the habilitation facility Medea. |
