Mentioned in 1293 for the first time, the town of 6,650 lies on the boundary between Moravia and Silesia. Historically, it used to be the seat of the Lords of Kravaře and Žerotín. Today, Fulnek is the region's richest place in cultural sights. |
The Most Holy Trinity's Basilica
The Most Holy Trinity's Basilica is certainly one of Moravia's finest. Built by M. Thalher's design in 1748-60, the church has been adorned with J. I. Sadler's frescos. The altar paintings came from F. I. Leicher and sculpture works from F. O. Hiernle. Other paintings were created by I. Raab. The basilica is part of the former Augustinian Monastery premises which belonged to the canons invited to Fulnek in 1389. The Gothic cloister dates back to the early l5th century. The basilica has a unique access staircase to the square

St Roch's Chapel shows the transition from Renaissance to baroque. The last renovation was accomplished in 1996. The chapel belongs to a baroque cemetery, one of the few baroque graveyards in Moravia. The cemetery is close to the Capuchin Monastery which, perched on the hill opposing the château, was meant to be a spectacular dominant at a time. St Joseph's Church is part of the monastery. Both the church and the monastery are much shabby today
Renaissance houses and baroque facades in the Comenius Square suffered heavy damage during the military clashes that swept the place in May 1945. Architect Zdeněk Sedláček was appointed to lead the restoration works. The square's dominant is the tower of the 1610 built Town Hall which had also been damaged several times by frequent fires. A massive arcade gallery was added to the spire height during the post-war renovation. The roof has been repaired several times, but retained its baroque style. The Holy Trinity Post was erected in the middle of the square by Sturmer, a sculptor of Olomouc, in 1718. The St John Sarkander's Fountain and the St John of Nepomuk sculptural group were hewn by the famous J. J. A. Heintz in the middle of the l8th century
The château virtually presides over the town. Originally a late l3th-century Gothic castle, it was rebuilt it the late l7th century by Václav Bruntálský of Vrbno. Following a fire in 1810, it was redeveloped to the present appearance. A vast renovation is currently under way
Comenius Memorial -the 15th century Moravian Brethren Congregation, and piece of National Treasure today. The coat-of-arms of Jan Skrbenský of Hříště and his wife, supporters of the Moravian Brethren, is placed above the entrance. Following the Brethren's expulsion, the Congregation House was converted first into granary and later into hospital. A part of the complex was remodelled into the showy Knurka's Palace with a valued baroque portal and a stucco relief which depicted Virgin Mary's Coronation |
