Zábřeh is the second largest town of the Šumperk District. Situated on the left bank of the Moravian Sázava in the place of the mid-l3th-century Slavonic settlement, it profited from the old trade route from Bohemia and Moravia to Klodzko, evolving into the economic and administrative centre of this part of Moravia soon. Many noble families held Zábřeh for a time, but it was only the Tunkl Family who chose Zábřeh for family residence in the l5th century. Zábřeh was granted many freedoms and kept growing in economic terms. The moderate growth continued, with some breaks, down to the middle of the l9th century when the railway between Prague, Olomouc and Vienna helped Zábřeh acquire the position of regional industrial centre. In spite of some negative interference of the last decades, the historical centre could retain its architectonic character which has been put stress on in the last years. The population amounts to some 15,000. The country around Zábřeh is quite suitable for one-day trips and for recreation. There are many hiking and biking routes and quite a lot of public sports facilities-let us name the holiday area with lakes and playgrounds at Dolní Bušínov, the tennis courts and the indoor and outdoor swimming-pools. |
