In 1263 Přemysl Otakar II founded the monastery of the Holy Crown
of Thorns to counterbalance Vyšší Brod not far away which belonged to the Rožmberks.
The nave of the Church of the Assumption was completed around 1370. Michal Parler, brother
of Peter Parler who built the St. Vitus Cathedral, contributed to part of the stone work. The monastery, by now called Zlatá Koruna (Golden Crown), was burned out by the Hussites in the Hussite wars and only provisionally repaired. It had to wait until the 17th century when the Spineti family, father and son, restored it completely. The main altar and cenotaphs in memory of the founder, Přemysl Otakar II and donor, Bavor II of Strakonice were acquired in the 2nd half of the 18th century under the last abbot of Zlatá Koruna, Bylanský. In the nave of the church there is also the tombstone of the Zvíkov burgrave Hirza. In 1785 the monastery was abolished by Josef II and turned into a workshop. Attempts were begun in 1909 to restore the original beauty of Zlatá Koruna, today it houses an exhibition of the State Scientific Library. The legend attached to this place concerns the old lime tree which stood in the courtyard between the monastery church and the abolished Church of St. Margaret. In 1420, it is said, the Hussites hung seven of the monastery inmates headed by the abbot Rudgen, and from then on the tree bore leaves which curled in the shape of a monk's hood. |
