During that time innumerable week - end cottages, cabins and holiday facilities have sprung up around the dam. Probably only older boating men remember the peat-bogs below Černá and near Dolní Vltavice and the "heart of the Šumava" above Horní Planá, which Adalbert Softer, a native of these parts, described so perfectly in his writings. Work began on the dam in 1950 with the building of new roads and railway lines, and the transfer of cemeteries from the areas to be submerged. The considerable declivity of the river Vltava enabled a mechanism to be constructed whereby the water falls down a shaft cut through the rock to a depth of 160 metres, and turns the wheels of two Francis turbines. The water then flows out along a 3,5-km-long almost level canal to a reservoir above Vyšší Brod. The 28-metre-high dam wall of earth and concrete blocks is faced with stones. The dam lake is over 40 km long and water sports centres line its banks. The surrounding forests which are accessible from both sides are threaded with paths with outlook points giving views over the lake. The house in Horní Planá where the writer, Adalbert Softer, was born is open to the public. In his novels and short stories he lauded the beauý of the Šumava (Bohemian forest) region and also its history. One of his tales is based on the local legend about Vítkův Kamen, a castle ruin above Lipno. The figure of a weeping woman dressed in black walks through the ruins and from her eyes pearls fall instead of tears. But they quickly dissolve on the ground. The lady of the manor is weeping for her dead betrothed. He who collects the pearls before they melt away, rids her of the imprecation and is rewarded with the pearls. Medvědí stezka - or Bear Path on the forested slopes of Perník runs from the Ovesná railway station, past the Medvědí kamen rocks where the last Šumava bear was shot in 1856 to the Černý Kříž railway station. The way is lined with bizarre rock formations caused by the action of the weather on the coarse - grained granite. Trojmezná hora - nature reservation on the highest parts of the Trojmezi uplands with the Třístoličník, Trojmezná and Plechý peaks and Plešné Lake. The project of the Schwarzenberg forestry engineer, Josef Rosenauer, was realized in 1789-1822. The canal is 44,4 km long, the tunnel above Jelení, 389 m long, was built in 1821-1822. Vlkov - nature reservation "Pískové přesypy" - very well preserved sand dune with unique dwarf pine forest, lying on the edge of an extensive flooded quarry. |
