Vyšší Brod originated as a settlement guarding a ford across the
Vltava earlier than the monastery, which was founded in 1259 by Vok of Rožmberk as a
thanksgiving for the saving of life when the river overflowed its banks. The monastery's
oldest part is the sacristy. Vok summoned Cistercian monks to the original chapel who
started to build the Church of the Assumption with adjoining cloisters and a chapter hall,
vaulted on a single slender pillar. Under the presbytery there is the Rožmberk family crypt. After the interment of the last Rožmberk, Petr Vok, in 1612 the vault was closed and the entrance to it hidden under new paving. The monastery was damaged several times by ime. The present furnishings of the church are mainly in Baroque from the 1640s. The abbey (now the Post Museum) and most of the farm buildings around the monastery arose at the same time. The monastery library dating from 1757 contains rare manuscripts and incunabulae. The monastery was returned to the Cistercian Order, the church with picture gallery and the library are open to the public. The Post Museum acquaints visitors with the development of postal services and equipment. |
