The tomb of the Hluboká branch of Schwarzenbergs, a circular
neo-Gothic object, stands in the large English park near the banks of Svět pond. At first
the Schwarzenbergs were buried in the nearby Chapel of St. Giles, but on the orders of
Countess Eleonora a chapel with crypts was started in 1875, designed by the builder of the
Liberec town hall, Jan Schmidt, and supervised by Damasius Deworetský, and finished in
1877. The plain chapel is dominated by a neo - Gothic altar of white sandstone, plaster and marble, built by sculptor Josef Pokorný. One of the strict conditions for burying here was that the body had to be embalmed and enclosed in a double coffin. 26 Schwarzenbergs who died after 1786 have been interred here till now. |
