Rokytnice v Orlických horách boasts of an over 700 years old history. Founded by the Lords of Rychnov some time around 1260, the coalman's settlement changed owners several times before the 1627 purchase of the whole domain by Jan Mikuláš Nostitz. The Nostitz Family held Rokytnice until 1928. A turning point came in 1906 when the Doudleby-Rokytnice railway was inaugurated. This improved the communication with the municipalities around. But the turbulent 1930s brought more changes. A new system of military fortifications was built up. Concrete artifacts testify to those eventful times today, one of them being Fort Hanička. During World War Two, Rokytnice belonged to territories annexed to the German Reich while Rokytnice's post-war history reflected all the events that shook Czechoslovakia. A Soviet garrison was stationed here in 19691991. But their withdrawal in March 1991 was the start of the spell of fresh air that brought something new. The town's face has got new make-up, private businesses started emerging and travelling visitors started coming. Holidaymakers appreciate clean air and beautiful, unspoilt natural sceneries through which you can walk along the marked paths. No. 1 attraction is the Jirásek Heritage Trail which follows the old Czechoslovak defence line built up in 193538. In summer, Rokytnice stands for playgrounds, tennis courts, outdoor swimming, fishing, horse rides, bikes and tours to regional centres of sports and culture. Winter life bustles along the downhill ski pistes and crosscountry skiing tracks. |
