The best time to verify the optical parallel between Nové Město nad Metují and Betlehem is a snowy winter day, when you can climb the hill that overlooks the snow-clad town. Turning back, you'll get astonished over the panorama of the Orlické Hory, a mountain range that is beautiful all around the year. Nové Město nad Metují is nicknamed the "Gate to the Orlické Hory" because most summer and winter holiday places, cottages and sports facilities are within easy access. Nové Město nad Metují has been a registered urban treasure since the 1950s. The town's foundation stone was laid by Jan Černčinský of Kácov in 1501 who made a lucky choice. The town sits upon a rocky headland in a meander of the Metuje river. The next owners -the Pernštejns-have one big merit: the Renaissance architecture which makes Nové Město nad Metují one of Czechia's pearl sights. All the fine cloisters have survived down to our days and northern front gables have been restored to re-acquire their old form and beauty. The skyline is only complete thanks to the château that was rebuilt to its present looks by the architect Dušan Jurkovič. It also includes several churches with the Krčínský Church beeing the oldest of all. Another gem of architecture is the wooden church at Slavoňov of 1553 some 3 km away. Last but not least-the beautiful countryside that invites for romantic wanderings. |
