Recorded in the annals of history as late as 1384, the location must have been inhabited in the Bronze Age, finds of contemporary burial places indicate. A border fort was here in the times of Great Moravia. Local inhabitants have always been good at farming. Lanžhot's cadastre is covered by 3,500 hectares of forest, a small portion, some 30 ha, being virgin forest. Although the owners changed many times, the village has always been Czech. Lying upon the Morava River, present-day Lanžhot is a border crossing to Slovakia with two road and one railway crossings. There used to be three border crossings to Austria across the Dyje (Thaya) River, too, but, destroyed during World War II, they have never been revived. Farming has almost ceased here. The inundation forests around are a valued natural habitat. Lanžhot's natives are either state administration employees or commute to nearby Břeclav for work. The place is proud of local rich traditions of folk culture and a bonanza of national costumes. To attend Lanžhot's Feast of September is an impressive experience-erection of a 40 m maypole by hand, pairs airing their costumes, traditional hospitality. It is always a great occasion for lovers of beauty and tradition. Today's popu lation amounts to 3,750. Architectural sights include several registered houses, a church and mansion of old times, the 1924 erected school, the modern border crossing, and the TRANSGAS station. |
