Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou is a town of 3,300 inhabitants situated between the historic centres of Znojmo and Mikulov close to the Austrian border. Geomorphologically, the town finds itself in an arable lowland along the Jevišovka River at an altitude around 180 m. The economy is based on agriculture, especially on grain, maize, sugar beet, vegetables, fruit tree gardens nad vine. The industry, too, concentrates on agricultural products, with one exception-the shoe factory. Sugar refining enjoys a long local tradition. The first sugar campaign was started in 1850 and in 1970 Hrušovany got a new refinery, one of Czechia's largest with annual output of some 50,000 sweet tons. Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou is among South Moravia's oldest municipalities. Mentioned in writing only in 1131 for the first time, Hrušovany's history started much earlier, in fact, in the time of the migration of peoples. King Vladislav II granted market freedoms of a city to Hrušovany in 1524. Hrušovany was entitled to have a coat-of-arms, flag and seal. The oldest surviving seal imprint dates back to 1745. The town and surrounding domain changed owners quite often. The last known owners were the Khuen-Belassi family. Hrušovany boasts of many historic sights. The prime position among them belongs to the l8th-century St Stephen's Church. Archaeological investigations have unearthed evidence of an older Gothic sacral building on the same site. The church has altars dedicated to St Stephen and to St John of Pomuk and an organ built in 1785 inside. The square is crowned by the 1711 Most Holy Trinity sculpture and there are protected historic objects in the cemetery-namely the chapel and the artfully made iron cross on Professor Max Dvořák's grave. The Emín Mansion close to Hrušovany (summer residence of the Khuen-Belassis) was where the carrier of Alfons Mucha, the world-famous painter, started while he was a young decorator in the service of Earl Khuen-Belassi. Hrušovany nad Jevišovkou enjoys a strategic position along the road between Vienna and the inland of Moravia. At present, biking routes have been prepared to link together many natural and historic sights of South Moravia. |
